The excellent flavor of the variety of Van cherry, allows us to begin the collection before its optimum point of maturation. The high hardness of this variety of cherry tree gives us a good resistance in the tree and a large collection margin.

Attributes or characteristics of Van cherry

Flowering: Van is a self-sterile variety, belonging to Group II and medium flowering (first week of April). Among other varieties, they can pollinate it Summit (Group I), Burlat (Group XVI), Santina (Group IX).

Maturation: Van cherry is collected 17 days after Burlat. Considering, by its ripening date, a variety of cherry half station.

Productivity: Van is a very productive variety, placing studies done, its potential production in more than 20t / ha.

Vigor and bearing of the tree: Depending on the studies it is attributed with a vigor or vigorous, standing within a balanced range, the bearing of the tree is semi-erect.

Chill hours: Information presented by the IMIDA indicates cold needs of 668 hours below 7ºC or 1036 Cold Units according to the Richardson method (Utah).

Agronomic characterization of Van cherries

Size: The size of the fruit is 27-28mm, the result size of the cherry goes from medium to thick The size is acceptable, if we take into account the high production that may come to present this variety of cherry.

Form: The cherry has a reniform.

Skin color: When it is mature, it has a garnet color that is very attractive commercially.

Pulp color: The flesh of the cherry has a dark red color.

Taste: Van cherries have a taste very good. I have several cherry trees of this variety and I can assure you that it is a delicious cherry.

Firmness: The cherry is firm consistency, which gives us that crunchy feeling so nice to eat.
Crack resistance: Crack resistance is good, one step below the maximum resistance to cracking.

Cracked area: Cracking usually occurs in the apical zone of the cherry.

Peduncle length: The peduncle length is short. This feature helps the cherry visually present a larger size than it should be. However, the short peduncle may make it harder to harvest the fruit.

Drop the peduncle when it reaches maturity, allowing picking without a tail. It is one of the cherries without a tail or cherry pillory More cultivated.

Van has received a lot of its large productive capacity, its excellent taste and hardness,

Positive aspects: Presents a very high productivity. Produce good quality fruits. It has a fast entry into production. The cherry resists transport well.

Negatives: You need a variety for pollination. It’s sensitive the virosis and to the monilia (to obtain quality cherries we will need to apply fungicide treatments).
