The Canada Giant cherry (2E 64 3), was registered in 1992 under the name of Sumgita. Obtaining was done by the Summerland experimental station, located in Canada. The origin of Canada Giant® is a cross made between the varieties Van and Sam. It appears as Sumgita in the varietal record in the EU, having validity the rights until the year 2022.
Curiosities: Canada Giant is a variety fruit of the same varietal crossing that Summit and features similar to Summit, although it is a more productive variety. That is why it is usually referred to as Improved Summit.
Characteristics of the Canada Giant Cherry
Flowering: The variety of cherry Canada Giant, is self-sterile, therefore, it needs cross-pollination. Sumgita is of late bloom (second week of April). It belongs to Group I of pollinators. IPS recommends Kordia (Group VI, late flowering) for pollination. German sources propose Kordia with early pollination varieties such as Celeste (Group IX) or Satin (Group II).
In Spain data published by the IMIDA indicate that its flowering is tempana-media (Coincident with New Star or 4 84). Due to the distortions that exist between different sources, the Canada Giant flowering date can be very sensitive to the climate of the growing area, and it is advisable to have pollinator varieties for an extended period.
Maturation: The variety of cherry Canada Giant, is medium maturation. Sumgita is harvest 16 days after Burlat.
Productivity: The Canada Giant cherry is high.
Vigor and bearing of the tree: The Canada Giant tree is vigorous and has a semi-erect bearing, erect for other sources consulted.
Canada Giant Cherry, morphological characteristics
Size: Canada Giant cherries have a caliber or size thick-very thick. When mature, Sumgita reaches a size of 28-30 mm.
