Early Red cherry, was obtained by private investigator Marvin Niess, California (USA). Its origin is the variety Prime Giant released de viruses like the Crinkle Leaf. The variety is within the varietal record of the European Union with the name of Maraly, year 2007. The exploitation rights of the Early Red variety of cherry extend until the year 2037, being necessary the authorization of the publisher (INNOVAR) to multiply the variety.
Curiosities: It is a variety of very recent introduction, in Spain the problem with Prime Giant can stop its spread. It is a cherry of excellent quality whose main problem is its low resistance to cracking.
Characteristics of Early Red cherry
Flowering: Early Red variety is self-sterile and early flowering (last week of March). Maraly belongs to Group XVIII (S 1 S 9) of pollinators. Among other cherry varieties, they can pollinate it Samba (Group II), Sweet Heart (Group III) and Staccato (Group III).
Maturation: Early Red cherries matures 6 days after Burlat. Therefore, Maraly is a variety cherry early.
Productivity: Early Red’s productivity is elevated. There are no published studies of plantations in Spain, Italian sources say that their production is high and constant.
Vigor and bearing of the tree: Early Red cherry tree is strong and semi-erect.
Agronomic characterization of Early Red cherry
Size: Early Red cherry is thick in size, reaches 28-30 mm in diameter.
Form: The variety of cherry Early Red, has a reniform form.
Skin color: Early Red reaches maturity when it presents Garnet color.
Pulp color: Early Red cherries, have pulp of dark red color.
Taste: The flavor of Early Red cherries is very good. Brix 23-25º reaching maturity.
Firmness: Early Red cherries are firm. It is a cherry of high firmness, German sources give it a Durofel of 75-80.
Cracked Resistance: Early Red has little resistance to cracking, cracking or splitting. In Italy they recommend plastic cover for the plantations of this variety of cherry.
Length of the peduncle: The cherry Maraly has the peduncle short.
Do not release the peduncle.
Positive aspects: Early harvest cherry. Wide harvest period. Cherry quality, firm and suitable for transport.
Negative aspects: Requires pollinators. Sensitive to cracking.
